20 years, 4 clubs, 974 games: Cristiano Ronaldo’s journey to 700 club goals

He is at his lowest point since his move to Manchester United in 2021, but the team’s attacker, Cristiano Ronaldo, did something on Sunday that he will be forever remembered for. He scored his historic 700th club goal against Everton at Goodison Park.

The 37-year-old Manchester United attacker became the first footballer to reach the 700 club goals milestone. The international player from Portugal has scored 700 goals in twenty years and two days since he scored his first goal while playing for four clubs – Sporting Lisbon, Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus.

After his 700th goal, Man United coach Erik ten Hag said: “It is a huge achievement if you score 700 goals. I am really for him and I congratulate him on that achievement.”

Ronaldo goals in club football career

He started his career with a Portuguese club, Sporting Lisbon, when 17-year-old Cristiano scored five goals in 31 appearances. In his first spell at Manchester United between 2003 and 2009, when he was nurtured by legendary football coach Sir Alex Ferguson, Ronaldo scored 118 goals. Cristiano’s first-class performances began in his first stint with Manchester United, but it peaked in Bernebau at Real Madrid when he scored 451 goals in 438 competitive appearances in his nine years at the club.

In 2019, after accepting his transfer to Juventus, things initially looked difficult for the right-footed attacker, but he soon found his mojo as he scored 101 goals in two seasons. Later, after a transfer back to Manchester United in 2021, he scored 26 goals.

In his 20-year club career, Ronaldo has scored an average of 35 goals a year. In 2006, he averaged more than 40 goals a year. During his tenure at Real Madrid, he averaged 50 goals a year over nine years, helping Los Blancos win two La Liga titles and four Champions League trophies.

Ronaldo is six feet tall and is known for his header goals as he found the back of the net 16.1 percent making it 113, followed by Dutch footballer Luuk de Jong who has 78 goals to his name .

Only two footballers have scored 700 goals (for both the country and the clubs), namely Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. However, Ronaldo needed 974 games to achieve this feat, while left-footed Argentina international Messi scored 700 goals in 862 games.
