‘A lot of hard work but not getting a chance’: Prithvi after missing Ind vs Sa ODI

Team India will play its second-tier team in the ongoing ODI series against South Africa. Senior opener Shikhar Dhawan has been appointed as the team captain for the Ind vs SA ODIs, while Shreyas Iyer is the vice-captain for this series. The squad also has youngsters like Shubman Gill, Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan, Rajat Patidar and Ravi Bishnoi. Ever since the BCCI announced the team, people have started to question the selection process because one big name was missing from Prithvi Shaw’s squad.

The Mumbai-based opener has consistently hit the bowlers in the domestic circuit. Also for India A, he made 77 in the one-day series against New Zealand A.

In an interview with Mid-Day, Shaw said: “I was disappointed. I score points, do a lot of hard work, but don’t get a chance”.

He added: ‘But it’s good. When they [national selectors] feel I’m ready, they’ll play me. Whatever opportunities I get, be it for India ‘A’ or other teams, I will make sure I do my best and keep my fitness up.”

The Mumbai batter also spoke about his fitness, saying: “I didn’t work on various things in my stroke, but did a lot of fitness work. I worked on weight loss and reduced by seven to eight kg after the last IPL. I spent a lot of time in the gym, did a lot of running, didn’t consume sweets and cold drinks. Chinese food is no longer my menu at all.”

Shaw now plays in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

“We played a few practice matches here [in Ahmedabad]. All players are in good shape. We have good all-rounders, batsmen and bowlers. I think it’s a very strong team. All support staff are working hard on our preparation and I am optimistic that I will do well as a team. All the players on this team are based somewhere, have played at a good level and are experienced,” said Shaw.
