Amid labor shortages and high unemployment, Canada has announced a new measure for international students. While Statistics Canada said the Canadian unemployment rate fell to 5.2 percent in September, Immigration Secretary Sean Fraser announced a new temporary measure to ease severe labor shortages in Canada.

What is the new measure that can help Indian students in Canada?

The new measure may allow more than 5,000,000 international students already in Canada to work longer hours. International students with an off-campus work permit on their study permit are now allowed to work off-campus for more than 20 hours per week, even if their class is in session. In addition, the measure can also be used by foreign nationals who have already submitted their application for a study permit.

Is the measure temporary?

Yes, the measure is temporary. The new rule will run from Nov. 15, 2022 to Dec. 31, 2023, as it aims to reduce labor shortages in Canada, the immigration minister said.

What are the current rules out there?

Currently, international students applying to study in Canada are allowed to work up to 20 hours of off-campus work during their studies. This limit is only lifted during scheduled breaks in the curriculum, such as summer or winter holidays.
