Ajay Bhadoo: Everything you need to know about India’s new Deputy Election Commissioner

New Delhi: The Cabinet Appointments Committee on Sunday approved the appointment of Ajay Bhadoo as Deputy Electoral Commissioner of the Election Commission of India. The press release from the Secretariat of the Cabinet Appointments Committee read: “Appointment of Ajay Bhadoo, lAS (GJ:1999), as Deputy Electoral Commissioner, Election Commission of India, from the date of taking over the post, for a general term of office of five years until 24/07/2024 or until further orders, whichever is sooner.”

He was appointed joint secretary to former President Ram Nath Kovind in July 2020. Bhadoo, an IAS officer from Gujarat, has also served as the Municipal Commissioner of Vadodara. In July 2018, he was appointed municipal commissioner. He is a civil engineer and writes on his website ajaybhadoo.in as stated on his twitter and facebook bio.

According to The Indian Express report, Bhadoo has served in various capacities during his 19 years with the IAS, holding positions as collector, municipal commissioner, secretary to the chief minister of Gujarat and co-secretary to former president Ram Nath Kovind.

He was also the CEO and Vice Chairman of the Gujarat Maritime Board, the Chief Executive Officer of the Gujarat Infrastructure Development Board, the Dholera Special Investment Regional Development Authority, the General Manager of the Gujarat Industrial Corridor Corporation and the General Manager of the Dholera International Airport Company.

During his tenure as DDO in Bharuch district, he implemented a biometric attendance system for government employees in 2003-04 as part of his good governance initiative. The initiative received wide recognition and awards as a pioneering project. During his tenure as District Collector of Mehsana, Bhadoo led initiatives such as water conservation, land record digitization and online file registration, revitalization of public libraries and modernization of the district’s midday meals.
