Amid war in Ukraine, EU reaffirms €7 billion pledge to restore global food security

Russia war in Ukraine eight months behind us and yet the end is not in sight. Despite intense West opposition to Moscow, Russian President Vladimir Putin has clearly refused to give in. While world leaders have signaled the possibility of using nuclear weapons, a shortage of food and fuel has been one of the top global concerns.

World Food Day, which commemorates the founding of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), also highlighted the crisis facing millions of people as a result of the conflict. “The Russian war of aggression against Ukraine has dramatically exacerbated the global food crisis, pushing millions of people into poverty and hunger,” tweeted EU International Partnerships. The Directorate-General for International Partnerships is responsible for formulating the EU’s international partnership and development policy.

“On World Food Day, we reaffirm our commitment to restore global food security, as the EU mobilizes €7.7 billion for partner countries until 2024,” it continued. Russia and Ukraine together are said to account for nearly a third of global wheat and barley exports.

Not only the European Union, but also the United States have reaffirmed their promise. “Russia’s war in Ukraine has exacerbated a global food system already suffering from the effects of climate change and Covid,” tweeted Cindy McCain, the US envoy to UN agencies in Rome. “On World FoodDay, and every day, the US continues to support communities in need and address the growing global food crisis,” she added.

Last month, at a major event, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken had said: “By the beginning of 2022, conflict, COVID-19, the effects of the climate crisis had already driven more than 190 million people to acute food insecurity. According to Toe Adding to the World Food Program, President Putin’s brutal war of aggression in Ukraine could add another 70 million people — an already staggering number that is getting more staggering.”
