At least 11, including Russian soldiers, were killed in shootings near Ukraine; Moscow calls it ‘terrorist attack’

Moscow: Two men shot at soldiers at a Russian military firing range near Ukraine, killing 11 and wounding 15 before being killed themselves, Russia’s defense ministry said. The ministry said in a statement that the shooting took place on Saturday in the Belgorod region of southwestern Russia, which borders Ukraine. It said two men from an unnamed former Soviet republic shot at volunteer soldiers during target practice and were killed by backfire. The ministry called the incident a terrorist attack.

The shooting took place amid a hasty mobilization ordered by President Vladimir Putin to bolster Russian forces in Ukraine, a move that sparked protests and forced hundreds of thousands to flee from Russia. Putin said on Friday that more than 2,20,000 reservists had already been called up as part of an effort to recruit 3,000,000. He promised that the mobilization would be completed within two weeks.

Mobilization has been difficult from the start, with authorities sending confusing signals about who should be called up for service in a country where nearly all men under 65 are listed as reservists.

Although the Russian leader stated that only those who had recently served in the military would be drafted, activists and rights groups reported that military conscription agencies were detaining people without any military experience, some of whom were also unfit for service for medical reasons.

Some of the newly called up reservists posted videos of themselves being forced to sleep on the ground or even outside and given rusty weapons before being sent to the front lines. According to Russian media reports, some of those who were mobilized were sent to battle without proper training and were quickly killed. The authorities have acknowledged that the mobilization was often poorly organized and promised to improve the situation.
