Bharat Jodo Yatra: Sonia Gandhi joins the yatra of the Rahul-led Congress at Mandya in Karnakata

New Delhi: The Congress interim president joined the party’s ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ in Mandya, Karnataka on Thursday morning, October 6. Sonia Gandhi reached Mysuru on Monday afternoon and made his way to the starting point of the padayatra, which resumed today after a two-day stop for Dussehra. She reached Jakannahalli and joined the foot march which resumed from Pandavapura Taluk at 6:30 am. The official conference report tweeted a video of Sonia Gandhi joining the march, writing: “More strength in our fight against tyrannical and divisive forces as Congress President Smt Sonia Gandhi joins the march.”

On September 30, the Yatra started its Karnataka leg. The congressional president was seen walking with her son, Congresswoman Rahul Gandhi, and other congressional leaders. On October 5, she had visited and prayed at the Bheemanakolli Temple in the village of Begur. Sonia Gandhi was joined by local female MLAs Anjali Nimbalkar, Roopakala and Lakshmi Hebbalkar.

Day 29 of the ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ started with the raising of the flag at 5:30 am at Exhibition Grounds, Mysuru where Bharat Yatris participated in the Dasara celebrations.

Karnataka Congress head DK Shivakumar said today that it is a matter of pride for veteran Sonia Gandhi to walk on the street. “After Vijayadashami, there will be Vijaya in Karnataka. We are proud that Sonia Gandhi has come through the streets of Karnataka. We are coming to power in the state and BJP is on the way to closing shop,” said DK. Shivakumar.

“The march resumed after a one-hour bus ride to the starting point of padayatra near Mandya. The president of the congress will participate around 8 a.m.,” senior congressional leader Jairam Ramesh tweeted this morning.

The Padyatra (march) covers a distance of 25 km every day. The march was intended to cover as many as 12 states in five months. It will be in Karnataka for 21 days before moving north.

According to the Congress, the ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ is being held to combat the divisive politics of the BJP-led Center and to make the people of the country aware of the dangers of economic inequalities, social polarization and political centralization.

Notably, all party MPs, leaders and workers, along with Rahul Gandhi, are staying in containers. Sleeping beds, toilets and air conditioners have also been installed in some containers. During the trip, the temperature and the environment will differ in many areas.

The arrangements are made taking into account the intense heat and humidity with the change of places. Congress suffered a debacle in the election polls held earlier this year and the Yatra is seen as an attempt to rally the party’s grassroots for the upcoming election campaign.

The Congress Bharat Jodo Yatra will cover 3,570 km in 150 days. It started on September 7 in Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu and is expected to end in Jammu and Kashmir.
