BIG BATTLE FOR Mamata Banerjee, TMC MLA Manik Bhattacharya Arrested By ED In Teacher Recruitment Scam

KOLKATA: In a major blow to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, the Enforcement Directorate formally arrested TMC MLA and former West Bengal Primary Education board president Manik Bhattacharya on Tuesday in connection with teacher recruitment scams. Bhattacharya was arrested by the central authority after interrogating him overnight in connection with the case.

He is the former chairman of the State Council for Elementary Education and was removed from office by the Supreme Court of Calcutta in June. He is the second high-profile TMC MLA arrested after Partha Chatterjee in connection with the teachers’ recruitment scam. The CBI had issued a warning in August against Bhattacharya regarding his alleged role in discrepancies found in the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) to appoint state primary school teachers.

Shortly after Bhattacharya’s name surfaced in the scam, the state police said he will no longer have police protection. The Calcutta Supreme Court had previously ordered the removal of Bhattacharya from the post of chairman of the West Bengal Board of Primary Education over allegations of widespread corruption in teacher recruitment.

Bhattacharya was then grilled by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). The ED has already arrested then Education Minister Partha Chatterjee and his close associate Arpita Mukherjee in the West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) recruitment scam. After the arrest of Chatterjee and Mukherjee, the ED also subpoenaed Bhattacharya for questioning.

The CBI has also arrested former West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) adviser Shanti Prasad Sinha, former WBSSC chairman Ashok Saha and former WBSSC president Kalyanmoy Ganguly in connection with the scam.
