‘Both states have BJP governments, but still…’: Jaspur BJP leader Bhullar calls for CBI investigation into wife’s murder

New Delhi: Days after the wife of BJP leader Gurtaj Singh Bhullar was shot dead in Udham Singh Nagar in Uttarakhand by the UP Police team at his residence, Bhullar on Saturday, October 15, 2022, called for a CBI investigation into the matter. He also claimed that the police officers who killed his wife were drunk, wearing civilian clothes and had no search warrants. He also said the vehicle he was in had no license plates. Bhullar said the police team is spreading propaganda that they were held hostage in our residence.

According to UP police, the wife of BJP leader Gurtaj Singh was killed in a crossfire between the police team and Jaffar, the man wanted in illegal sand mining. Though Bhullar claims that the UP police are making up a story to justify his wife’s murder.

Nilesh Anand Bharne, Kumaon’s DIG, had previously stated that UP personnel had not informed the local police and were not in uniform. In addition, an officer from the forensics department who examined the site stated that there was no evidence of crossfire, as claimed by UP police.

Calling for justice, Bhullar said both states have a BJP government and said: “If I am in the wrong I should be punished, but a fair investigation must be done.” He expressed his sadness, saying: “I am also a public representative of the government, but this all happened to me”

Initial angle of the case:

The clash on Wednesday night took place in the village of Bharatpur near Kashipur in Udham Singh Nagar district of Uttarakhand. The police officers had come from the adjacent Moradabad district in search of Jafar, allegedly a member of a mining mafia. Based on a tip, a team from Thakurdwara Police Station in Moradabad reached Bharatpur to raid the home of BJP leader and Jaspur senior block pramukh Gurtaj Bhullar in search of Jafar, UP police said.

When they reached Bhullar’s house, an argument broke out. Both sides allegedly resorted to shooting that killed Bhullar’s wife Gurpreet, who was returning home from work. Udham Singh Nagar SSP Manjunath TC said the UP Police team had not informed their Uttarakhand counterparts about the action in advance. After the incident, angry villagers blocked the highway in protest. Kashipur MLA Trilok Singh Cheema, Gadarpur MLA Arvind Pandey and former MP Balraj Passi joined the protesters.
