Brazil extends lead in world rankings, Spain falls below Italy

With the latest change in the FIFA World Rankings before the World Cup starts next month, Brazil increased their lead at the top and Spain fell below Italy.

Brazil, the only team to have competed in every World Cup final, will enter the tournament in Qatar next month in search of a record-breaking sixth crown.

They will do so with a bigger lead at the top of the rankings, after friendly wins over Ghana and Tunisia widened the gap on second-placed Belgium losing to the Netherlands in the Nations League.

Brazil’s big rivals Argentina remained third, with world champions France fourth and number two at Euro 2020, England fifth.

There was good news for Italy, which again failed to qualify for the World Cup final, as they climbed to sixth place above Spain.

Other World Cup-bound teams to climb the rankings were Croatia, which rose three places to 12th place, Iran rose two places to 20th and Serbia which rose to 21st.
