Casper Ruud loses, Nick Kyrgios wins at Japan Open

Top seeded Casper Ruud lost and Nick Kyrgios won Tuesday’s Japan Open. Ruud, who reached the final at both the French Open and the US Open this year, lost to Jaume Munar 6-3, 6-3. Kyrgios, who lost in the Wimbledon final, defeated Tseng Chun-hsin 6-3, 6-1 to reach the round of 16. He then takes on Kamil Majchrzak, who defeated Sho Shimabukuro 7-6 (2), 6-2.

The win for Kyrgios came on the same day his lawyer asked an Australian court to dismiss the charges against him for mental health issues. Magistrate Glenn Theakston adjourned the case until February 3.

Kyrgios, 27, will appear in person on that date for the first time since his July summons by police. The assault charge, with a possible maximum sentence of two years in prison, relates to a January 2021 incident reported to local police in December last year. The charges are related to an incident involving his ex-girlfriend.
