Central Govt Grants Nod to Start Medical College at Jamia Millia Islamia University

The vice chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia University Najma Akhter has said that the central government has given permission to start a medical college in Jamia Millia Islamia University. The Vice Chancellor announced the news during a speech at the university’s Centenary Year Convocation held today at the Vigyan Bhawan. Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar was the chief guest at the convocation ceremony. It is reported that about 12,500 students will receive their diplomas today at the convocation ceremony. Minister of Education, Skills Development and Entrepreneurship Dharmendra Pradhan presided over the convocation ceremony. The varsity will award diplomas to students who graduated in the university’s 2019 and 2020 batch.

“We have Dentistry, Physiotherapy, First Aid Health Centers, but there is no medical school in Jamia. As a VC, I have always asked for a medical school, on behalf of my students and teachers. We have requested the same from the Government of India, and now I am happy to announce that JMI has been granted permission to establish a medical school on the campus,” said Najma Akhtar at the ceremony.

“Our hard work paid off. Our dream of several years came true today. I would like to thank the Prime Minister, the Minister of Education, the President and the Vice President of our country for their help in this. In line with NEP 2020, our vision is to start with the Middle East, expand our footprint outside the country and locate our centers in different places around the world,” she added.

Notably, the central university has been striving hard in recent times for the establishment of a medical university under its umbrella. Earlier in October last year, Jamia’s Vice Chancellor Najma Akhtar urged the center to grant approval for the establishment of a medical college under the university. In response to the request, the Ministry of Education asked the university for details of the varsity’s projection, vision and readiness to establish the medical college.
