DNA exclusive:

Controversy has erupted after the religious organization All India Hindu reportedly portrayed Mahasabha Mahatma Gandhi in an ‘asura’ idol at a Durga Puja pandal in Kolkata’s Ruby bypass. The idol of asura resembling Mahatma Gandhi was installed at the pandal after which a complaint was lodged with the Kolkata police. Later, changes were made to the idol of asura after the intervention of the Kolkata police.

In today’s DNA, Rohit Ranjan of Zee News analyzes the “hatred” and “polarization” that led to such an outrageous incident in Kolkata.

Outraged by the idol’s installation in southwestern Kolkata, people on social media sought the immediate arrest of Hindu Mahasabha leaders who organized the Durga puja.

However, organizers Akhil Bharatiya Hindu Mahasabha claimed it was “a coincidence” that the Mahishasur idol, who had a bald head and was dressed in a white dhoti and round glasses, bore a resemblance to Gandhi, but social media was unconvinced.

“Immediately arrest the officials of Hindu Mahasabha for portraying Mahatma Gandhi as an asura in a Durga Puja in Kolkata,” tweeted one Atanu Chakravarty, tagging Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Following the incident, Congress leader Bagchi filed a complaint with the Kolkata Police, alleging that the move by the Hindu Mahasabha was an act of “sedition” and “damaging national integrity”.

He also asked the police to stop the puja at the said location immediately. “I have filed a complaint against Chandrachur Goswami and the other officials of the state unit because the idol of asura is depicted as Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the nation.

This law governs sedition and is completely harmful to national integrity. So a complaint has been made to the police station to file a zero FIR and take the necessary steps. The complaint also states that the puja must be stopped immediately.

I filed the complaint after a discussion with the President of the State Congress, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury,” he said in a video. Earlier, Congress condemned the incident and demanded the “severe” action against the organizers of the puja.

“The entire Indian Hindu Mahasabha in Kolkata has mistakenly portrayed Mahatma Gandhi in Durga Puja pandal. This is a crime that we strongly condemn. Strict action must be taken against the organizers. We are not tweeting that picture. There is no place for it this photo, this thinking in every corner of the world,” Congress tweeted.
