Giant dome collapses as fire engulfs mosque in Indonesia – Details here

Jakarta: In a horrific incident on Wednesday, the dome of the Great Mosque of the Jakarta Islamic Center in Indonesia collapsed after a major fire broke out. Despite dramatic images on social media of the mosque’s dome collapse, authorities claimed there were no casualties, according to Gulf Today. During the renovation, a fire broke out in the dome. At least ten fire trucks were dispatched to the site after firefighters received a report about the incident just after 3 a.m. local time, Indonesian media said.

Before the mosque collapsed, video footage showed flames and smoke from the dome. The origin of the fire is still unknown. According to media sources, the Islamic Center was being renovated at the time. Neither the fire nor the ensuing fall caused any injuries. Local media also stated that, according to Gulf Today, authorities questioned contractors who were present during the fire and are investigating its origin. In addition to the mosque, the Islamic Center complex also includes commercial, research and educational facilities.

The mosque’s dome last caught fire during renovations more than 20 years ago, and in October 2002, according to Gulf Today, it took five hours to put out the fire. The area was evacuated after the mosque fire. It took 18 fire engines to put out the fire because it was so bad. After several hours of hard work, the fire was finally extinguished. The fire at the mosque is reported to have been caused by a short circuit, as renovations were underway at the time.
