Great achievement! Indian Nuclear Submarine INS Arihant Fires Ballistic Missile in Landmark Test

India’s domestically built nuclear submarine INS Arihant carried out a successful launch of a submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) in the Bay of Bengal on Friday, hitting the target with high accuracy. “The missile was tested to a predetermined range and struck the target area in the Bay of Bengal with very high accuracy. All operational and technological parameters of the weapon system have been validated,” the defense ministry said in a statement.

The successful launch of the SLBM by INS Arihant is important to prove crew competence and validate the SSBN program, a key element of India’s nuclear deterrent capability, the ministry said.

“A robust, survivable and assured retaliatory capacity is consistent with India’s policy of having a ‘credible minimum deterrence’ underpinning its commitment to ‘no first use’,” the ministry added.

INS Arihant was launched on July 26, 2009 by the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. In August 2013, the submarine’s nuclear reactor was activated. Strategic Strike Nuclear Submarines (SSBNs) are considered the most credible platform for a country like India, which has a ‘no first strike’ policy on the use of nuclear weapons.

India has also decided to expand its arsenal of nuclear submarines as it moves to four other SSBNs along with six nuclear-powered SSNs such as the INS Chakra nuclear submarines leased from Russia on several occasions. The submarines would mainly counter the growing presence of nuclear submarines of the Chinese navy in the Indian Ocean.
