Gyanvapi Case: Varanasi Court Calls For Investigation Of Two Basements On Nov. 2

New Delhi: A court here set November 2 for a hearing on a plea for measuring two basements in the Gyanvapi Mosque complex and fined the mosque committee for not filing an objection in a timely manner. District government attorney Mahendra Pandey said the court had previously asked the mosque committee to object to Hindu prosecutors’ plea in the complex Gyanvapi mosque-Shringar Gauri case. “The mosque side could not object, after which the court fined them Rs 100 and set them for questioning on Nov. 2,” Pandey added.

The court also rejected four people’s requests to become parties to the case on Friday. Earlier in the day, the court rejected similar requests from seven people. Former Kashi Vishwanath temple mahant Kulpati Tiwari, Hindu Sena national president Vishnu Gupta, weaver Mukhtar Ahmed Ansari and Brahmin Mahasabha president Ajay Kumar Sharma were among those who had applied to become a party to the case, Pandey said. While some of the petitioners prayed to join the case to request permission for regular worship of gods whose idols are on the exterior wall of the mosque, others claimed to have detailed knowledge of the matter.

Lawyers involved in the case allege that the cellars are located near the “wazookhana”, a ablution site in the mosque complex. One of the Hindu petitioners also argued for ensuring the safety of the idols of Lord Ganesh and Goddess Lakshmi, which they say have been recovered from the complex. Last Friday, the court rejected the Hindu petitioners’ plea for scientific research and radiocarbon dating of a “Shivling” allegedly found on the grounds of the mosque. The Muslim side has rejected the claim. The Gyanvapi Mosque is located next to the iconic Kashi Vishwanath Temple, and the Varanasi court case has revived claims that the mosque was built on part of the Hindu structure demolished on the orders of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb.
