India has witnessed an increase in fatal road accidents and to provide assistance to the victims, Ministry of Civil Aviation has recently launched ‘Sanjeevani Seva’ to provide timely assistance to needy patients, especially those from hilly and remote and difficult areas. Sanjeevani, ie helicopter emergency ambulance service of AIIMS Rishikesh, will cover all corners of the country, to provide rapid medical assistance within the golden hour. Therefore, three special helicopter corridors have been built in the country to facilitate the same. Within the scope of this service, the aim is to make this service available in all seasons and at any time. This will be a stepping stone for spreading the services and improving medical outreach facilities across India.

Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia recently announced three new projects to improve the helicopter sector in the country, including: Project Akash, Helicopter Emergency Medical Services (HEMS) and fractional ownership. The government plans to expand medical assistance and access to trauma care services to a wider population across the country using helicopters. Scindia also announced a project – ‘Akash’ to improve the safety of helicopter operations and provide day and night access in all weather conditions.

The helicopter ambulance service center will be started at AIIMS Rishikesh, initially for 6 months under the pilot project. Efforts are underway to get helicopters to patients within 20 minutes of the first call. The helicopter has a stretcher and a doctor to transport a patient. A pilot has the necessary medical equipment. The helicopter will be able to fly a distance of 300 km without refueling. The government concludes a contract with the service provider that can meet these conditions.

The center of this entire service will be the AIIMS Rishikesh helipad, as the area of ​​operations includes mountainous terrain, the air operator will need to provide trained pilots to operate. Air operations are governed by the DGCA rules.

2. The concerned department then reviews the patient’s condition and the case report for approval

3. After approval, the patient is taken to the landing zone of the trauma helicopter

4. An air ambulance is equipped with the necessary equipment and first-line health personnel who will accompany the patient to the final destination. Just like in a normal ambulance, an air ambulance contains oxygen, blood thinners and a breathing system. It also has a blood pressure and heart rate monitor along with a heart rate monitor.

5. A patient is then properly secured to the chair / stretcher / air mattress, based on the installation in the aircraft

6. After obtaining all necessary air and medical clearances, the aircraft will land at the destination

7. When booking from a government hospital, please contact the government hospital and the district administration. After speaking with them, an ambulance may be used, depending on the situation.
