‘I was willing to even play a horse in the film if Mani Sir wanted to,’ says ‘PS-1’ star Karthi

Bombay: Indian actor Karthik Sivakumar, known professionally as Karthi, is a name that needs no introduction. The actor, who was last seen in the Mani Ratnam magnum opus ‘Ponniyin Selvan: Part 1’, considers the director his mentor and was ready to take on any role in the film – even that of a horse – as he didn’t want to miss his chance to work with the director, known for movies like ‘Roja’, ‘Bombay’, ‘Guru’ and ‘Yuva’ among others.

Sharing his thoughts on ‘Ponniyin Selvan: Part 1’ and how he was cast, he said, ‘Ponniyan Selvan’, the name itself has a huge identity for the Tamil diaspora. People have owned this novel (the movie is based on author Kalki’s bestseller of the same name) and resonated with its characters. The specific book has been relevant for a long time, still has many fans and is a bestseller with exhibitions every year. ”

Going on, he said, “Major filmmakers have strived to make it into a movie and it has proved elusive. Finally, Mani Ratnam completed the task. I received a call saying that Mr. Mani would like to meet me and he wants me to to play a role in this movie. I walked into his office and then he offered me the role of Vandiyathevan. Who would say no to that!? I was willing to even play a horse in the movie as Mani Sir that wanted. it. He is my guru.”

Speaking to IMDb, the actor also spoke about his blockbuster hit ‘Kaithi’ as he said, ”Kaithi’ is definitely one of the important movies in my career. It came to my mind as a small idea but at the time I listened to it, I knew it was a big action movie. We did a lot of research to design Dilli, the protagonist. Since he became the savior of the police, I think his appearance should be as simple and unassuming as possible.”

He went on to say, “Through our research, we knew that prisoners don’t want to be noticed, so they never look the person in the eye or speak. The sky is their only connection to nature because they are born within walls.”

He recalled a viral food scene of his character Dilli in Kaithi that sparked a meme fest and added, “I think he only had to have sambar rice for all three meals of all 10 years. And when he finally had biryani, became an iconic scene for this movie. The action of the movie, the choreography, direction, music and emotional aspects made Kaithi a very memorable movie and I am so glad it turned out that way.I can say that there is a sequel to is coming and hopefully we will start filming next year.”
