Iga Swiatek Skips Billie Jean King Cup Final, Complains About Planning

Iga Swiatek will not play for Poland in next month’s Billie Jean King Cup final in Glasgow, the world number one said Monday after disagreeing with the sport’s governing bodies and their handling of the tournament calendar.

Swiatek had helped Poland to the finals in April, but the tournament will be held November 8-13, just one day after the season-closing WTA Finals to be held this year in Fort Worth, Texas.

“I’ve thought a lot about it and discussed it with my team again, but I won’t be able to play at the Billie Jean King Cup in Glasgow. And it makes me sad,” the Pole said on Instagram.

“I’m very sorry because I play for Poland when I can and I always do my best. Playing in Poland this year was an honor and I hoped to do it again at the end of the season.”

“I am disappointed that the governing bodies of tennis have not come to an agreement on something as basic as the calendar of tournaments, which gives us only one day to travel the world and change the time zone.”

While the WTA Finals are hosted by the Women’s Tennis Association, the Billie Jean King Cup – formerly known as the Federation Cup – is hosted by the International Tennis Federation (ITF).

“This situation is not safe for our health and could cause injury. I am going to talk to the WTA and ITF to change something,” Swiatek added.

“This situation is not only difficult for the players like me, but especially for the tennis fans who support our sport.”

The Billie Jean King Cup will have 12 teams competing in four round-robin groups of three teams each, with the group winners advancing to the semi-finals. Poland is in Group D with the Czech Republic and the United States.
