IIT Madras organizes National Scientific Road Safety Conclave

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) hosted a national scientific conclave on road safety on Tuesday, October 11, 2022 with the participation of industry stakeholders and the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Government of India.

According to a press release issued by IIT Madras, a hackathon was launched during the event to develop a system to improve road safety and prototype a permit system for those who want to apply for a driver’s license.

A panel discussion was held on driving behavior and road safety. A second panel discussion on New–Age Driver Training also took place.

Tamil Nadu Special Task Force shared their experience with the scientific enforcement approach to road safety.

During the inaugural session, Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras: “Road safety is going to work together with technology. However, every road, region and city has its own DNA. Educating drivers is the most important thing in road safety and school bus drivers is a good start. Children see them driving the most and are affected by it.”

According to the press release, a new driver’s license procedure called ‘3 Gate Licensing’ (3GL) has been launched that provides an objective way to measure their driving behaviour, their knowledge of road safety and driving etiquette before obtaining a valid driver’s license.

A ‘Train the Trainer’ program was launched for school bus drivers with a planned outcome where young people at an impressionable age learn about road safety and get the message across.

shri. Chennai Police Commissioner Shankar Jiwal rejected the program saying: “We tend to project fatalities. Enforcement, although important for road safety, loses value after a point. It only works if there is a deterrent. The history of a potential road user must be vetted before a driving license is issued.”
