India announces 21-man squad for FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup

India’s head coach Thomas Dennerby on Wednesday named a 21-man squad for the upcoming FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, which kicks off on October 11 in Bhubaneswar. Host India has been drawn in Group A along with the US, Morocco and Brazil.

They will face the US on October 11, followed by games against Morocco and Brazil on October 14 and 17 respectively at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar. “It is a new situation for everyone. India has never played the World Cup. This is a totally different ball game,” Dennerby said.

“It is a unique opportunity to show everyone that we have prepared well and that no one can run over us.”

The prestigious tournament will be held in Bhubaneswar, Margao in Goa and Navi Mumbai from October 11-30. In the Kalinga Stadium, three group matches of India will take place.

“When you’re on the pitch, everything is held back and you just have to focus on the game. That’s what the girls have to do.

“We don’t go into the tournament as the favorites. I think the pressure is on the opponents,” said the head coach.

Pointing to the importance of performing well on the pitch, Dennerby said: “Performance is key for us. And I hope the girls are not very nervous and will play with confidence. You can’t be nervous and perform at the same time. It’s time to get the ball rolling.”
