India could increase shoe exports tenfold in the near future: Piyush Goyal

New Delhi: India has huge potential in the footwear sector and could increase production and exports tenfold in the near future, Trade and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said Friday.

He said this while speaking virtually about ‘Meet at Agra-Leather, Footwear Components & Technology Fair’.

Goyal said about 7,000 small industries are linked to the footwear sector, which is vital to the country’s economy and foreign exchange earnings.

India is the second largest producer of shoes and leather clothing and could become the world leader, accounting for nearly 3 billion square meters of the world’s tannery, he added.

He advocated for ethical and responsible practices – zero-waste disposal, salt-free tanning, and occupational health and safety interventions.

He said strong global branding through roadshows, electronic platforms and global joint ventures will help the industry make a global mark.

Goyal also said the center is working to achieve zero-duty access through free trade agreements (FTAs) in leather goods, sportswear and footwear.

He added that all the leading brands for commodities depend on India.

He urged the industry to come up with a plan for Indian brands with high-quality projects to find their way into the global market.
