India opposes Russia, votes to demand secret ballot on Ukraine in UNGA. TO REFUSE

United Nations: Going against his closest ally, India has voted to reject Russia’s demand for a secret ballot in the UN General Assembly on a draft resolution condemning Moscow’s “illegal” annexation of four regions of Ukraine, which saw New Delhi along with more than 100 other countries is in favor of a public vote on the text. Albania on Monday tabled a motion before the 193-member UN General Assembly to take action on the draft resolution calling for Russia’s “illegal so-called referenda” and the “attempted illegal annexation of the regions of Donetsk, Kherson, Luhansk and Zaporizhzhya Ukraine.” by a registered vote.

In response, Russia demanded that the resolution be voted on by secret ballot. However, Moscow’s demand for a secret ballot was rejected after 107 UN member states, including India, voted in favor of a registered vote. Only 13 countries voted in favor of the Russian call for a secret ballot, while 39 abstained. Russia and China were among the countries that did not vote.

After the motion to hold a registered vote was passed, Russia appealed the ruling of the general assembly chairman. A recorded vote was held on Russia’s appeal, and India was among the 100 countries that voted against Moscow’s challenge.

Russia then requested a reconsideration of the decision to adopt the motion submitted by Albania for a registered vote. The General Assembly decided not to reconsider the motion after 104 countries, including India, voted against such a reconsideration, while 16 voted in favor and 34 abstained.

Russia’s Permanent Representative Vassily Nebenzia slammed the UNGA, saying UN membership had “witnessed an outrageous fraud in which the Speaker of the General Assembly unfortunately played a key role”.

“We have not been given the floor to make a point of order (the indicator light on our seat is still on), our statement was distorted and now UN member states are being deprived of their right to freely express their views. “unprecedented manipulation that undermines the authority of the General Assembly and the United Nations as a whole. Of course, in such circumstances, we chose not to vote,” he said.

Interestingly, India abstained last month, while Russia vetoed a draft UN Security Council resolution tabled by the US and Albania to condemn Moscow’s “illegal referenda” and the annexation of four Ukrainian territories. declared invalid.

The 15-member UN Security Council had voted on the draft resolution on “illegal so-called referenda in Ukraine” hours after Russian President Vladimir Putin signed treaties at a ceremony in the Kremlin to annex Ukraine’s regions of Luhansk, Donetsk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhya.

The resolution was not adopted because permanent UN Security Council member Russia vetoed it. Of the 15 country council, 10 countries voted in favor of the resolution and China, Gabon, India and Brazil abstained. After Russia’s veto, US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield pledged to continue to push for accountability at the United Nations in the General Assembly, where each country has a vote.

The UNGA action came hours after Russia launched attacks on multiple Ukrainian cities, including Kiev, that killed at least 10 people and injured about 60 others in Ukraine. In New Delhi, Foreign Ministry spokesman Arindam Bagchi said the escalation of hostilities was in no one’s best interest and noted that India stood ready to support all such efforts aimed at de-escalating the situation.

“India is deeply concerned about the escalation of the conflict in Ukraine, including attacking infrastructure and killing civilians,” he said, urging an immediate cessation of hostilities. India has not yet condemned Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and has insisted that the crisis must be resolved through diplomacy and dialogue. India has abstained from voting on the conflict in Ukraine in the UN General Assembly and the Security Council.
