Indian football coach Igor Stimac extends contract until AFC Asian Cup 2023

Indian football head coach Igor Stimac has extended his contract until the end of the 2023 AFC Asian Cup. An official publication by the All India Football Federation (AIFF) on Tuesday confirmed the development, which read: “India Men’s Senior National Team head coach Igor Stimac has Tuesday, October 4, 2022 signed an extension of his contract with the Football House in New Delhi, until the end of the AFC Asian Cup 2023.”

The release further stated that the decision was taken last month by the Technical Committee of the AIFF and subsequently ratified by the Executive Committee in their respective meetings in Kolkata in the same month.

It added that if India advances to the quarter-finals of the continental tournament, the Croat’s contract will be automatically extended.

“I am extremely pleased that the AIFF has placed its confidence in the process we have put in place,” Stimac said in the press release. “We’ve had a very good run in qualifying and we want to make sure we continue to build ourselves up to the Asian Cup and give a good picture of ourselves in the continental stage,” the coach added.

Stimac has been coaching the Blue Tigers since 2019, among whom India has qualified for the tournament for the second time in a row.

“Now that we are certain of qualifying, we have to make sure that we keep improving and find our best combination until the Asian Cup,” the coach said. “Again, it’s not an easy process and there will be a lot of pain along the way, but if we can stick to the right procedure and not take shortcuts, we can reach our goal of making it to the knockout rounds.”

The Secretary General of AIFF, Dr. Shaji Prabhakaran, said: “The new team in AIFF would like to see a forward movement for the national team and we are determined to rebuild it with a fresh approach by developing a new plan exclusively for the senior national team.”
