J&K: Vehicles stranded as huge stretch of road on Jammu-Srinagar Highway collapsed due to rain

New Delhi: Hundreds of vehicles were stranded in Udhampur late Saturday night when the Jammu-Srinagar Highway remained closed after a huge stretch of road along the highway collapsed due to heavy rain earlier in the day, ANI news agency reported. According to the report, a section of the road connecting two tunnels on the state highway has been washed away after landslides in several parts of the Ramban district following heavy rains.

Several landslides have hit the Jammu-Kashmir national highway, the only all-weather road connecting Kashmir to the rest of the country. The landslides occurred in Mehar, Cafeteria Morh, Keela Morh, Sita Ram Passi and Panthiyal in Ramban.

According to a traffic official, work was underway to clear the road and repair the affected section amid relentless rainfall. “People are advised not to drive on the highway until restoration work is completed,” the PTI news agency quoted the official as saying.

Meanwhile, several landslides occurred near Rata Chambh on Mughal Road, an alternative link connecting the twin border districts of Poonch and Rajouri to the Shopian district of southern Kashmir. Train service between Banihal and Qazigund stations was also suspended due to heavy rainfall.

Weather office issues ‘red’ alert for seven districts in Himachal

Landslides occurred in several places on four lanes and connecting roads after heavy rains in the Bilaspur district of Himachal Pradesh on Saturday. In view of the weather, the Himachal Pradesh Traffic, Tourist and Railway Police advised people not to travel on the dual carriageway and urged them to travel on the national highway, ANI reported.

The meteorological department issued a “red” alert for seven districts in Himachal Pradesh and predicted extremely heavy rainfall on Sunday, PTI reported. An “orange” heavy to very heavy rain warning was also issued for Shimla, Sirmaur, Solan and Lahaul and Spiti.

Meanwhile, about 6,000 Amarnath Yatra pilgrims were stranded in Ramban due to the suspension of the yatra due to bad weather, ANI reported.
