Liz Truss steps down as UK Prime Minister after 45 days in office to become Britain’s shortest-serving Prime Minister

New Delhi: Liz Truss announced Thursday (October 20, 2022) that she will resign as Britain’s Prime Minister, just 45 days into her term, making her Britain’s shortest-serving Prime Minister. Truss faced an open revolt against her leadership when a growing number of Conservative Party MPs called for her to step down amid mounting chaos at the heart of the British government. In just six weeks as prime minister, she was forced to give up almost all of her policy programs after it led to a desperate bond market collapse and a collapse in her approval ratings and those of her Conservative party.

Speaking outside her office and residence at number 10 Downing Street, she realized that she could not keep the promises she made when she ran for the Conservative leader because she had lost her party’s faith.

“I acknowledge, however, that given the situation, I cannot fulfill the mandate to which I was elected by the Conservative Party. I have therefore spoken to His Majesty the King to inform him that I am resigning as leader of the Conservative Party.” Truss said. .

“This morning I met the Chairman of the 1922 Committee, Sir Graham Brady. We have agreed that there will be a leadership election within the next week. This will ensure that we remain on track to continue our fiscal plans and economic growth. stability and national security of our country,” she added.

“I will remain prime minister until a successor is elected. Thank you,” Truss said.

The latest turmoil comes a day after Suella Braverman’s explosive departure from the cabinet after admitting she violated the ministerial code by discussing government policy in private emails and a scathing farewell attack on her boss.

Since last Friday, Truss lost two of the top four ministers in government, sat expressionless in parliament as her new finance minister tore her economic plans to pieces and laughed at herself as she tried to defend her record.

She’s been fighting for political survival since Sept. 23, when her then finance minister and close ally, Kwasi Kwarteng, announced a “mini-budget” of massive, unfunded tax cuts that sent shockwaves through the financial markets.

Truss became Britain’s fourth Prime Minister in six years after being elected by its members to lead the Conservative Party in September. She promised tax cuts funded by loans, deregulation and a sharp right-wing shift on cultural and social issues.

British politics, in particular, has become unstable since the vote to leave the European Union in 2016 sparked a battle for the direction of the country.

Now all eyes are on former Chancellor Rishi Sunak to be parachuted down to take charge. He had lost to Truss in the leadership race last month.
