Microplastics found in breast milk for the first time What expert suggested?

Scientists have discovered microplastics in human breast milk for the first time, raising concerns about the health implications for newborns. Breast milk samples were collected from 34 healthy mothers in Rome, Italy, one week after giving birth, and 75 percent of them had microplastics, The Guardian reported.

The mothers’ consumption of food and drinks in plastic containers and seafood was monitored, as was their use of plastic-containing personal hygiene products. However, there was no correlation with the presence of microplastics. Therefore, the study went on to say that the ubiquitous presence of microplastics in the environment “makes human exposure inevitable.”

“So the evidence of the presence of microplastics in breast milk increases our deep concern about the extremely vulnerable population of infants,” said Dr Valentina Notarstefano of the Universita Politecnica Delle Marche in Italy. “It will be crucial to assess ways to reduce exposure to these contaminants during pregnancy and lactation,” she said.

“But it must be emphasized that the benefits of breastfeeding far outweigh the harms caused by the presence of polluting microplastics. Studies such as ours should not reduce children’s breast-feeding, but instead raise public awareness to inform politicians pressure to promote laws that reduce pollution,” Notarstefano added.

Previous studies have shown that microplastics are dangerous to human cell lines, laboratory animals and marine species, but their impact on real humans is unknown. Plastics often contain harmful chemicals, such as phthalates, previously found in breast milk.

The study, published in the journal Polymers, found microplastics made from polyethylene, PVC and polypropylene, all of which are commonly found in packaging. The researchers were unable to analyze particles smaller than 2 microns, and smaller plastic particles are likely to exist.
