Nayanthara-Vignesh Shivan becomes parents of twin boys, Tamil Nadu government to investigate surrogacy

Chennai: Tamil Nadu’s health minister, Ma Subramanian, has said an investigation will be launched into an argument over the twin babies of South Indian superstar Nayanthara and her husband and director Vignesh Sivan.

The couple announced on Sunday that they have become parents of twin boys. Although the couple made no official statement, there were reports that the babies had been conceived via surrogacy.

Several questions were raised as to whether the surrogacy laws in force in the country were followed by Nayanthara and Vignesh. It should be noted that the couple got married four months ago.

Tamil Nadu’s health minister, Ma Subramanian, said at a press conference on Monday evening that the surrogacy law itself is the subject of much debate.

He said those who are over 21 but under 36 are eligible for surrogacy with their family’s consent.

The health minister said an investigation would be launched and he would instruct the director of the medical service to investigate.

Subramanian told IANS, “An investigation will be launched and I will direct the Medical Services Directorate to investigate the same.”

In India, commercial surrogacy is prohibited and the criteria are that the surrogate must be married at least once and have her own child.

Under the latest Surrogacy Ordinance Act, effective January 25, 2022, the idea is the ban on commercial surrogacy.

Only altruistic surrogacy would be allowed, where, other than the medical expenses and insurance coverage of the surrogate, no other costs or expenses would be covered by the couple employing the surrogate.
