North Korea fires another missile at sea, South Korea military says

North Korea launched a ballistic missile toward eastern waters on Thursday, the South Korean military said. The launch marked the sixth round of weapons firing by the North in less than two weeks, leading to condemnation from the United States and other countries.

South Korea’s joint chiefs of staff said the launch was done on Thursday morning, but did not provide further details on how far the weapon flew.

Thursday’s launch came two days after North Korea fired a medium-range missile over Japan for the first time in five years. Foreign experts said the missile fired Tuesday involved a medium-range weapon that could reach the US Pacific region of Guam and beyond.

The wave of weapons tests in the north in recent days came after the United States conducted military exercises with South Korea and Japan in waters off the eastern coast of the Korean peninsula. North Korea considers such exercises an invasion rehearsal.

Following Tuesday’s launch, the United States, Britain, France, Albania, Norway and Ireland have called for an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council.

North Korea’s foreign ministry said in a statement on Thursday that it “strongly condemns the Korean People’s Army during joint exercises between South Korea and the US that have escalated military tensions in the Korean peninsula.”
