Okinawa Okhi-90 First Ride Review: Game Changer In The Electric Scooter Market

Okinawa is a well-known name in the Indian electric two-wheeler market. Well, the brand manages to score big on sales, but it has kept its distance from the premium electric scooter space. Not anymore, it says. With the introduction of its newest and stickiest scooter – Okinawa Okhi-90, the company is now looking at a new segment in the market, which includes products such as the Ather 450X, Ola S1 and TVS iQube. However, the question that the masses need an answer to is whether the Okinawa Okhi-90 electric scooter is worth its price tag of Rs 1,121 lakh. Interestingly, Okinawa is making high claims about its newest kid on the block, so let’s find out the same in this review.

Okinawa Okhi-90 Review – Design

The Okinawa Okhi-90 is a very distinctive scooter and one of the main reasons for this is its 16-inch aluminum rims. Yes, they are the largest ever seen on an electric scooter in the Indian market. The front features a pair of slim LED turn signals and LED daytime running lights. In addition, there is a round LED headlight. And these elements make the scooter look smart.

Move to the sides, it gets sleek side panels and tastefully designed footpegs. At the rear, full LED taillights make Okinawa stand out from the crowd. But the fit and finish could have been better for more durability and longevity of the scooter.

Okinawa Okhi-90 Review – Features

The Okinawa Okhi-90 is loaded to the brim. The electric scooter comes with a key fob with which you can lock and unlock the scooter with the push of a button. And the feature list doesn’t just end here. A fully digital instrument console is offered on the Okhi-90.

The cluster is configurable and can be upgraded to a multi-color LCD display that is IoT compliant. The setup allows you to keep track of the statistics and the location of the vehicle. In addition, the scooter can also be geofenced with the mobile application.

Okinawa Okhi-90 Review – Performance

With a 3.6 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, which powers the 3.8 kW motor, Okinawa Okhi-90 has quite a few numbers on its side. Also, both devices are exactly in the middle. Coupled with a 1,520mm wheelbase, this scooter definitely feels planted. Thanks to a low center of gravity. So changing lanes and negotiating through heavy traffic is no hassle at all. Taking into account the 16-inch wheels with a 100-section tire in the front and a 120-section tire in the rear, your grip and confidence will never run out.

Speaking of suspension, right-sided telescopic forks in the front and dual shock absorbers in the rear, that’s what the Okhi-90 gets. The setup has been tuned on the stiffer side and we wish a little more compression and damping was offered. Nevertheless, the stiffer suspension helps you with plenty of flickability. The brakes are good too because you have disc brakes on both ends and they work together to prevent any heart-in-the-mouth moment.

The engine is a very strong aspect of the Okinawa Okhi-90 and the scooter has two riding modes – Eco and Sport. In sport mode, this scooter can reach speeds of up to 80 km/h to the north, while in eco mode the speeds are largely limited to the range of 40 km/h. On-off throttle transitions are great too. Well, Okinawa claims 160km in eco mode, while in sport mode it would deliver somewhere around 100km. And in our testing conditions, for the most part, this claim was high.

Okinawa Okhi-90 Review – Verdict

Priced at Rs. At 1.21 lakh, the Okinawa Okhi-90 is a very decently priced offering and given it has a claimed range of 160km it is on par with its competitors. Although the fit and finish could have been better but the scooter offers a lot of performance. In addition, it is an electric scooter with many features and attracts a lot of attention with its rather distinctive design. That said, the Okinawa Okhi-90 will definitely suit you if you need an electric scooter with enough road presence, features and performance. However, you will have to miss impeccable fit and levels of finish.
