‘Pakistan is one of the most dangerous countries…’: US President Joe Biden

Washington: In perhaps the most candid statement made against it, US President Joe Biden described Pakistan as “one of the most dangerous nations” in the world with “unrelated nuclear weapons”. The US president made these comments during a Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee reception in Los Angeles, California, berating both China and Russia.

The comments about Pakistan were made while Biden talked about US foreign policy towards China and Vladimir Putin’s Russia. Biden concluded by saying that he considered Pakistan to be the most dangerous country in the world.

“This is a man (Xi Jinping) who understands what he wants, but has a huge, huge range of problems. How do we deal with that? How do we deal with that relative to what’s going on in Russia? one of the most dangerous countries in the world: Pakistan. Nuclear weapons without any coherence,” Biden said, as quoted in a White House press release of his comments at the Democratic party’s event.

Biden’s comments could be seen as a setback to the Shehbaz Sharif government’s efforts to improve ties with the US. Speaking at the event, Biden said there were huge opportunities for the US to change dynamics in the second quarter of the 21st century. “So folks, there’s a lot going on. A lot going on. But there are also huge opportunities for the United States to change the dynamics in the second quarter of the 21st century,” the US president said. These comments come two days after the publication of the US National Security Strategy. The 48-page document does not refer to Pakistan.

On Wednesday, the Biden administration released its Congress-mandated key policy document, underlining the threat posed by both China and Russia to the US. The National Security Strategy states that China and Russia, which announced a “no-limits partnership” earlier this year, are increasingly aligned, but the challenges they pose are different.

“We will prioritize maintaining a lasting competitive advantage over the PRC, while curtailing a still very dangerous Russia,” it adds. The policy paper states that competition with China is most pronounced in the Indo-Pacific, but is also becoming increasingly global. The US security strategy stressed that the next decade will be a decisive decade of competition with China. On the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, the document says Moscow’s “imperialist foreign policy” culminated in “a large-scale invasion of Ukraine in an attempt to overthrow the government and bring it under Russian control”.
