Party Presidential Poll Is A SIDESHOW, ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ Is Main Show: Congress

Chittanahalli: Congress on Friday claimed that “real” Rahul Gandhi emerges from the ongoing Bharat Jodo Yatra, which has been completed a month today. Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh in an interview described the foot march as the longest ever undertaken by anyone and said it will help Congress strengthen itself psychologically.

He also described the election of the congressional president as an “afterthought” and the yatra as the main show. “It’s a transformation of the Congress party and it shows that the real Rahul Gandhi is coming out. I wouldn’t say it’s the new Rahul Gandhi, but the real Rahul Gandhi that is being seen,” Ramesh said.

He said Gandhi’s interactions with civil society, party workers and his super fitness make up the “real Mr Rahul Gandhi”. “The biggest achievement is psychological. It’s all in the mind. I think what the yatra has done is to show the Congress party that we can do it.

“We are on the road, on the street, we are fighting the BJP. We are bringing the fight to their camp. We are raising issues. We are not responding. Now the BJP is responding to us and I think that is the best contribution from the yatra. It’s psychological rather than electoral,” the congress leader said.

Asked about the election of the president of the congress, he said that the “domestic evening show is the Bharat Jodo yatra and the organizational election is an afterthought as far as I am concerned”.

“The narrative setting is not the election of the Congress president, but the Bharat Jodo Yatra,” he added. Speaking to a non-Gandhi who is all set to lead the party, he said Sonia and Rahul Gandhi have a special place in Congress because of their contributions and legacy.

Ramesh said that when Jawaharlal Nehru first became president of the Congress in 1928, Mahatma Gandhi wrote to him that you wear a crown of thorns.

“It’s a crown of thorns. I think it’s definitely a historic moment, as we’re the only political party to hold presidential elections in a fair, transparent and impartial way. But as I said, it’s an afterthought The main show is the Bharat Jodo Yatra,” Ramesh said.
