Portugal winger Pedro Neto misses World Cup due to ankle injury

Wolverhampton Wanderers and Portuguese winger Pedro Neto are undergoing surgery for an ankle injury and will miss the upcoming World Cup in Qatar, his Premier League team said Friday.

The 22-year-old suffered the injury in the first half of Wolves’ 2-0 defeat to West Ham United last weekend.

The World Cup kicks off in Qatar on November 20, while Portugal kicks off its campaign against Ghana in Group H on November 24.

“Pedro suffered an ankle injury against West Ham on Saturday, straining the lateral ligaments,” Wolves said in a statement.

“After further evaluation and specialist advice this week, he is scheduled to undergo surgery. This means that unfortunately he will not be fit for the upcoming World Cup.”

Neto played three times for Portugal and scored once.

Portugal reached the last 16 at the 2018 World Cup in Russia and their best performance was a third-place finish in 1966.
