Prime Minister Narendra Modi speaks to Ukraine’s Zelenskyy, says ‘There can be NO military solution’


New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Tuesday, claiming there can be “no military solution” to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, while also underlining that endangering nuclear facilities could have catastrophic consequences.

During their telephone conversation, Prime Minister Modi and Zelenskyy discussed the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and the Prime Minister reiterated his call for a rapid cessation of hostilities and the need to continue the path of dialogue and diplomacy, according to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office. (PMO) here.

Prime Minister Modi expressed his firm belief that there is no military solution to the conflict and conveyed India’s willingness to contribute to peace efforts, the statement said. He also reiterated the importance of respecting the UN Charter, international law and the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all states.

During his meeting with the Ukrainian president, Prime Minister Modi emphasized the importance India attaches to the safety and security of nuclear installations, including in Ukraine.

The prime minister stressed that endangering nuclear installations could have far-reaching and catastrophic consequences for human health and the environment, the statement said.

The two leaders also discussed key areas of bilateral cooperation, following their last meeting in Glasgow in November 2021, it said.
