Rishi Sunak or Penny Mordaunt: Who Can Replace Liz Truss as Britain’s New Prime Minister?

New Delhi: British Prime Minister Liz Truss resigned on Thursday (October 20, 2022) and said she can “no longer” fulfill the mandate she was elected to last month. The Conservative Party leader ended her tenure at 10 Downing Street after just 45 days in the job following an open rebellion against her chaotic leadership. Brady, responsible for the Tory leadership election.

“We have agreed that there will be a leadership election in the coming week. This will ensure that we remain on track to implement our fiscal plans and preserve the economic stability and national security of our countries. I will remain Prime Minister until there are a successor has been chosen,” Truss said.

Truss, whose short term as prime minister beat the record set by George Canning, who had held the role for 119 days when he died in 1827, also said she had come into office because the country was facing great uncertainty.

Can Rishi Sunak Be The Next British Prime Minister?

Rishi Sunak, the former British Chancellor of the Exchequer, is seen as the most likely successor to Liz Truss. He was the most popular candidate among Conservative lawmakers in Westminster, but after coming to a runoff against Truss, he lost in a vote that involved some 1.70,000 party members making the final decision.

Many members were upset when Sunak quit in July, sparking an uprising that eventually toppled former British Prime Minister Borisn Johnson. They also ignored his warning that markets could lose confidence in Britain if Truss made her unfunded tax cuts.

Penny Mordaunt also seen as the new Prime Minister of Great Britain

Penny Mordaunt, a former defense minister, was a passionate supporter of leaving the EU, just missing the last two places in the recent leadership challenge. He was praised for her performance in parliament on Monday, when she defended the government even as it reversed most of its policies.

One legislator has described Mordaunt as having “broad appeal”, referring to her ability to find friends in the party’s various tribes.

Jeremy Hunt, Ben Wallace also featured in new UK PM race

When Truss’s economic program collapsed, the prime minister fired her finance minister and turned to Jeremy Hunt, former health and foreign secretary, to set things right.

A string of confident appearances on television and in the House of Commons when he tore up Truss’s economic manifesto has already led some Conservative lawmakers to call Hunt the “true prime minister”.

However, Jeremy Hunt has insisted he doesn’t want the top job, despite competing in two previous races to become prime minister, including 2019 when he lost to Boris Johnson on the last lap.

British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace is one of the few ministers to emerge from the recent political turmoil with greater credibility. Wallace, a former soldier, served as defense minister for both Johnson and Truss, and led the British response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Popular with party members, he surprised many earlier this year when he said he would not run for leadership, saying he wanted to focus on his current job.

However, the picture surrounding the next British Prime Minister remains extremely uncertain due to the deep power struggle within the Tory ranks.
