Rohit Sharma reveals why he asked Mohammed Shami to bowl last against Australia

India vs Australia warm-up match: Mohammed Shami’s fiery last-over (2,2,W,W,W,W) helped team India beat Australia by 6 runs in the warm-up match between India and Australia on Monday at Gabba. Notably, Shami was initially not included in India XI for the warm-up, but was brought in by skipper Rohit to throw the penultimate over. Australia needed 11 runs to the last left, but Shami’s bowling heroes helped India score a remarkable 6-run win over the hosts.

In response to Shami’s dream comeback, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma revealed that he wanted to challenge Shami by asking him to throw the last one right away as he returned to the side after a long time.

“Muhammad Shami was brilliant. We know how deadly he can be with the ball, and we’ve all seen what happened. He comes back after a long time, so we wanted to give him a chance. We wanted to give him a challenge and let him throw the final over, and you saw what he did,” said Rohit Sharma in the post-match presentation, ANI reported.

Talking about India’s batting performance against the hosts, Rohit praised Indian batter Suryakumar Yadav, who played a 50-run knockout in 33 balls.

“I thought we hit well, by the end we could have added 10-15 more runs. We always want a batter set to stay until the end, Suryakumar Yadav did it, overall a great batting attempt with a nice bounce, was a pitch where you can trust your shots. You have to be smart with hitting on terrains like this. You can’t forget to push the balls into the holes, scoring 8-9 runs in an over can be a pretty effective plan,” de India skipper added.

Referring to the fact that the men in blue can improve, Sharma added: “It was a great exhibition game for us. There is room for improvement, but I want more consistency from the bowlers. You have to keep things simple and working hard. Overall a good game for us, they had a good partnership and that put a lot of pressure on us.”
