RSS worries about unemployment in India; calls poverty ‘demon-like challenge’

New Delhi: The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) claimed on Sunday (October 2, 2022) that poverty masquerades as a “demon-like challenge ahead”, expressed concern about the alleged rising income inequality and unemployment in the country.

“…We should be sad that 20 crore people are below the poverty line. And 23 crore people earn less than Rs 375 per day. Poverty is a demonic challenge ahead of us. It is important that we kill this demon’, RSS Secretary-General Dattatreya Hosabale told PTI news agency.

In addition to poverty, “inequality and unemployment are two other challenges that need to be addressed,” he said.

“There are four crore unemployed in the country, 2.2 crore in rural areas and 1.8 crore in urban areas. A labor force survey finds the unemployment rate at 7.6 percent… We need schemes not only for all of India but also for local job creation schemes,” he said.

He blamed the ‘wrong’ economic policies of the previous governments for the ‘problems’ in the economy.

However, Hosabale said several steps have been taken in recent years to address this challenge. He also appreciated the efforts for “atmanirbharta” and several other Union government initiatives such as FPO, Jan Dhan, and programs related to healthcare and digital revolution.

He also suggested revitalizing the cottage industry and taking more initiatives in the skills development sector to further increase its penetration in rural areas.

On inequality, he wondered if it’s a good thing that, despite being one of the six largest economies, half of the country’s population has only 13 percent of total income.

“…India is among the six largest economies in the world. The top one percent of the Indian population has one-fifth of the country’s income. And at the same time, the country’s 50 percent gets only 13 percent of the total income, Hosabale said, asking, is this a “good situation?”
