Russia claims truck bomb exploded on key bridge to Crimea

Kharkiv: Russian authorities said a truck bomb on Saturday caused a fire and the collapse of part of a bridge connecting Russia-annexed Crimea to Russia — a key supply artery for Moscow’s faltering war effort in southern Ukraine.

The attack on the bridge comes a day after Russian President Vladimir Putin turned 70 and dealt him a humiliating blow that could take him to the next level in his war against Ukraine.
The Russian National Anti-Terrorism Committee said the truck bomb caused seven train cars carrying fuel to catch fire, resulting in a “partial collapse of two sections of the bridge”.

The commission did not immediately blame.

The Crimean peninsula has symbolic value for Russia and is key to supporting its military operations in the south. If the bridge is rendered useless, it would become a significantly greater challenge to transport supplies to the peninsula.

While Russia took the areas north of Crimea early in the invasion and built a land corridor to it along the Sea of Azov, Ukraine is pushing a counter-offensive to reclaim them.
