“Russian President Vladimir Putin will not SURVIVE a nuclear war,” warns Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelenskyy

Canberra: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Thursday it is difficult to say whether the risk of nuclear war has increased with his military’s gains, but he remains convinced that his Russian counterpart would not survive the escalation of hostilities. Zelenskyy addressed the international think tank Lowy Institute in Sydney via video link after the Ukrainian army illegally recaptured territory annexed by Russia last week. Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned that he will not hesitate to use nuclear weapons to fend off Ukraine’s attempt to regain control of the Moscow-occupied territories.

When asked whether the risk of Russia using nuclear weapons had increased, Zelenskyy said through an interpreter: It’s hard to say. He questioned whether Putin had enough control over the Russian campaign to lead a tactical nuclear strike. The Russians found it difficult to control everything that happens in their country, just as they don’t control everything they have on the battlefield, Zelenskyy said.

Zelenskyy said Putin understood that the world will never forgive a Russian nuclear attack. He understands that after using nuclear weapons, he would no longer be able to, so to speak, save his life, and I have every confidence in that, Zelensky said.

Meanwhile, Russian missiles hit apartment buildings in the southern Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhya on Thursday, a local official said, killing three people and injuring at least 12 in a region that houses Europe’s largest nuclear power plant and which Moscow has illegally annexed.

The two strikes, the first before dawn and another in the morning, damaged more than 40 buildings, authorities said. The attacks came hours after the Ukrainian president announced that his army had recaptured three more villages in one of the four regions annexed by Russia, Moscow’s latest battlefield reversal.
