Shiv Sena Symbol Row: Shinde faction claims ‘bow and arrow’ poll symbol, EC asks Thackeray camp to respond

New Delhi: Shiv Sena’s Eknath Shinde faction met India’s Election Commission on Friday (October 7, 2022) and claimed the party’s “bow and arrow” poll symbol. The Election Commission has asked the Uddhav Thackeray faction of the Shiv Sena to respond to the claim of rival camp Eknath Shinde on Saturday ahead of the upcoming round of elections in the state.

The Shinde faction has filed a memorandum requesting that the election symbol be assigned “bow and arrow” as the bypoll of the Andheri East assembly approaches.

In a letter to Thackeray, the Commission asked him to provide comments, together with the required documents, by 2 p.m. on 8 October.

Earlier this year, Shiv Sena broke into two groups after Eknath Shinde raised a flag of rebellion against Uddhav Thackeray for entering into an “unnatural alliance” with Congress and NCP. During the uprising, more than 40 of the Shiv Sena’s 55 MLAs had supported Shinde, leading to Thackeray’s resignation from the post of Maharashtra Chief Minister.
