In India, people usually prefer to stay indoors and not consume anything food products during the time of the Grahan or solar eclipse. Also, Darbha grass or Tulsi leaves are put in edibles and water to avoid the ill effects of the Grahan. Many believe in taking a bath after the eclipse is over and putting on new clothes.

The chanting of mantras dedicated to the sun god is another practice followed by many households in the country.

Pregnant women in particular are asked to stay indoors and sing the Santana Gopala Mantra.

Many abstain from drinking water during the solar eclipse period.

Also, preparing food or eating during the Grahan is prohibited. Starting a beneficial task is also avoided by many.
