T20 World Cup: Sunil Gavaskar predicts India’s fate in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah

The Indian cricket team took a huge blow when Jasprit Bumrah was officially banned from the ICC T20 World Cup to be held in Australia. BCCI said in a statement Monday: “The BCCI Medical team has excluded Team India’s fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup squad. The decision was made after a detailed review and in consultation with the specialists.”

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar believes it is nearly impossible to fill the void left by Bumrah. Writing a column for Mid-Day, Gavaskar stated: “The absence of Jasprit Bumrah from the Indian team for the World Cup will hurt India considerably. There is no other player in the Indian team, respecting any other player, whose absence is so much then means Bumrah.”

He added: “We saw in the two matches he played how effective he was and how his presence on the team encouraged the other bowlers. Whether he came back too soon is something in the nature of conjecture now, but the fact remains that his absence is a huge blow to India’s prospects in the T20 World Cup.The way Deepak Chahar and the young Arshdeep Singh have exploited the conditions in Thiruvananthapuram gives hope that, with a bit of luck, they will get a good chunk of fill the gap left by Bumrah’s absence.”

The BCCI has yet to announce a replacement for Jasprit Bumrah in the World Cup squad. Players like Mohammed Shami, Deepak Chahar and Mohammed Siraj are the top names who could replace him. The star pacer also missed the 2022 Asian Cup due to his back problem and made a comeback in the last two T20Is against Australia.

Earlier, Ravindra Jadeja was also banned from the T20 World Cup. Speaking about the comparison between Jadeja and Axar, Gavaskar said: “Ravindra Jadeja’s absence is largely made up for by Axar Patel, and the way he bowls gives the belief that he can both limit runs and take wickets. Over the years, he has added variety through the dexterous use of the fold and also delivery speeds and angles. All the experience gained in the IPL has been put to good use by the left-handed all-rounder. He will once again become the player to watch out for,” said the legendary Indian batter.

Team India is currently playing a three-game ODI series against South Africa. Ind vs SA 3rd T20 International will be played in Indore on October 4. After this, the Indian team flies for the World Cup T20 2022 on October 5.
