Ukraine ‘will not conduct negotiations’ with Putin: Zelenskyy tells Prime Minister Modi on call

New Delhi: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had a telephone conversation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday (October 4, 2022), telling him that he will not enter into negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Amid the ongoing conflict, Zelenskyy also stressed the importance of strengthening the Ukrainian-Indian partnership.

During the conversation, Zelenskyy noted that all of the aggressor’s decisions aimed at an attempted illegal annexation of Ukrainian territories “are null and void and do not change reality”.

He also told Modi that Ukraine has always been committed to a peaceful settlement through dialogue.

“However, Russia did not stand for dialogue and instead issued ultimata to purposefully undermine this process. During my speech at the UN General Assembly session, I set out our clear formula for peace. We are ready to cooperate with our partners to achieve it,” added the Ukrainian president.

“Nuclear blackmail by Russia, especially with regard to the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant, poses a threat not only to Ukraine, but to the whole world,” he said.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy also renewed the invitation to Prime Minister Modi to visit Ukraine.

The two leaders also separately discussed the issue of global food security and cooperation within international organizations, mainly the UN.

Zelenskyy also thanked Modi for India’s support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and also emphasized the importance of the Indian leader’s recent statement that “now is not the time for war”.

In a bilateral meeting with Putin on the sidelines of the annual Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Samarkand last month, Modi had stressed the importance of “democracy, dialogue and diplomacy” while calling for a rapid cessation of hostilities in Ukraine.

“I know that the current era is not of war. We have discussed this issue with you several times over the phone, that democracy, diplomacy and dialogue affect the whole world. We will have the opportunity today to talk about how we can move forward on the way of peace in the days to come,” Modi had said.
