Ukrainian capital Kiev rocked by several explosions: mayor

According to the mayor, several explosions hit the center of Kiev, the capital of Ukraine, on Monday morning. A cloud of black smoke was seen rising from buildings, Reuters reported.

“Several explosions in the Shevchenskivskyi district – in the center of the capital,” said Vitali Klitschko. “Details later.”

The explosions took place around 0815 local time after months of relative calm in Kiev and air-raid sirens sounded more than an hour before the blast in the Ukrainian capital, AFP reported.

There were no direct reports of casualties.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Sunday that the blast a day earlier on the bridge over the Kerch Strait was “an act of terrorism aimed at destroying critical civilian infrastructure”. The Kerch Strait is an important supply route for Moscow’s troops in southern Ukraine.

“This was conceived, implemented and ordered by the Ukrainian special services,” Putin said.

Ukraine has not claimed responsibility for the explosion.
