Will fight sexual assault charges: Former Nepali cricket captain Sandeep Lamichhane surrenders

Nepal’s up-and-coming spin bowler Sandeep Lamichhane confirmed on Saturday that he will surrender to Nepalese authorities to fight the charges against him. He has been charged with rape by a 17-year-old girl in a hotel room in Kathmandu, police said. A warrant for his arrest has also been issued for alleged rape, police said, as reported by AFP news agency.

On Saturday, the wrist spinner posted an update to his Facebook handle, declaring: “With great hope and strength, I hereby confirm that I will reach my home country of Nepal on October 6, 2022 and submit myself to the authority of Nepal to start a legal battle against the false accusation.

I hereby reiterate that I am INNOCENT and have a completely unshakable faith in the justice system. I am generally convinced that the law enforcement authorities and honorable courts are booking their fair trial and trial and I only hope to get justice at the earliest.”

The statement further added: “My dear benefactors assure you all that I am innocent and that I have done you no wrong. I have recovered from the unpleasant situation I have been through and I have prepared myself to go through this ordeal to prove that I am innocent and a victim of a conspiracy. I am sure that any false accusations brought against me will come to light in due course.”

The teenage girl filed an FIR against Sandeep with the Kathmandu Police Department in the Gaushala Police Ring. In T20 Internationals, Lamichhane has taken 78 wickets in 40 matches for Nepal against an economy of 6.26. He is best known for his frugal bowling in this format. He has also been given a chance to play in the Indian Premier League.

He is the only cricketer from Nepal to be included in the draft of IPL and also got the chance to play in this league. He made his debut in this competition for Delhi Capitals in the year 2018. During this period, he played only two seasons for Delhi in which he got the chance to play in 9 matches.
